Fellowships
One year MIS GI Fellowship programme at Kaizen Hospital
The 1-year fellowship programmes at Kaizen Hospital are designed to shape young surgeons into confident, skilled, and compassionate gastro-intestinal surgical specialists. Fellows are immersed in a high-volume surgical environment where they participate in a wide range of complex GI and HPB procedures daily. This constant, hands-on exposure strengthens their operative judgement, builds technical precision, and helps them mature from supervised learners into independent surgeons.
Training at Kaizen also provides meaningful experience in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery on India’s indigenous robotic platform – SSi Mantra. Fellows learn the nuances of case selection, operating room setup, robotic docking, stepwise execution of procedures, and supervised console work—giving them a strong foundation to adopt robotic techniques in their future practice.
A central aspect of the training is close mentorship under Dr. Sanjiv Haribhakti and the senior GI team. Through direct operative guidance, bedside teaching, pre- and postoperative discussions, and continuous feedback, fellows refine their decision-making, understand anatomy in depth, learn safe handling of complications, and develop clarity in clinical reasoning. Equally important is the development of communication skills, ethical practice, and patient-centred care—core values deeply ingrained into Kaizen’s culture. Fellows learn how to counsel patients honestly, communicate risks transparently, and treat each individual with empathy and respect.
Kaizen’s strong academic environment further enriches the fellowship experience. Regular journal clubs, clinical academic meetings, and video-based learning sessions foster analytical thinking and enhance the ability to evaluate evidence critically. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research, prepare manuscripts, present at conferences, and contribute to academic activities connected with the Haribhakti Education Foundation. These experiences help them grow not only as surgeons but also as academicians and future thought leaders.
Exposure to a diverse case mix—including GI cancers, liver and pancreatic diseases, colorectal conditions, emergencies, reoperative cases, and complex HPB pathologies—builds confidence in managing challenging clinical situations independently. Fellows also witness ongoing surgical innovations, device development, and technique refinement at the institution, inspiring them to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and a mindset of lifelong learning.
Most importantly, the fellowship cultivates character. Training at Kaizen instils the values of humility, ethical integrity, discipline, compassion, and continuous improvement. By the end of the year, fellows emerge as well-rounded surgeons equipped with strong operative skills, sound clinical judgement, academic maturity, and the human qualities essential for safe and meaningful surgical practice. It is a transformative year that shapes not just their careers, but the kind of surgeons—and individuals—they become.
